Where Does Race Matter?
Fall 2011
This visualization shows the percentage of high school students who drop out of school by race and state. This piece highlights that in almost every state white students have the lowest drop out rate.

I chose a visual form that emphasizes the different rates among races by placing the state's name along a vertical axis of the drop out rate. Connecting the datapoints creates a strong, vertical peak, emphasizing the disparity between white and non-white students in some states. Long, almost vertical lines indicate states where race makes a larger difference in dropout percentage compared to states with a more horizontal line across races.
