The first step in creating 3D Dipper was to realize that the stars exist in 3D space. Our constellations flatten the stars, and we connect the dots, like points on a piece of paper.
The second step is to research how they are positioned relative to earth. I found the data online and from that made a physical model. The three-dimensional model of the Big Dipper is almost unrecognizable to viewers. Viewers must be told how to hold the model and it often helps if they close one eye to flatten the model to resemble the (two-dimensional-seeming) way the Big Dipper is viewed in the sky.
